Places Discussion
The Places data is a
collection of places of public interest, the kind of additional
information commonly included in many other maps. Our Places data is based
around the following kinds of places.
· Transportation: airports,
heliports, ferry terminals, truck scales, train-bus-transit stations
· Public Safety: Police, Fire, Ambulance,
Hospitals, and Coast Guard stations
· Civic Structures: Courts, Correctional, City
Hall, Libraries, Museums
· Parks and Recreation: Parks, Community Centres,
Arenas, Curling Arenas, Golf Cources, Ski Hills
· Education: schools, colleges
and universities
· Commerce (a
future): key shopping areas and malls etc.
· Industry (a
future): key industrial site (dams, rail yards, docks, mines, mills etc.
The Places data set
currently consists of 13 groups ("pl_group").
Each has a set of sub groupings identified as types ("pl_type").
The data set includes the current name, past name if it has changed since
entered into the data set, the address, city, region, date entered, data
modified and coordinates for each entry. The Parks data set also includes a
polygon file of park outlines.
The Places data set
is the result of bringing together of various publicly available lists such as
the "Public and Independent Schools Book" data files available on the
Ministry of Education’s web site. These data sets are further augmented by
other web searches, fieldwork and telephone contact with various local
authorities.
The tables below provides a description of each field and data
type in the Places data set. This followed by an outline of each group and
type.

June 2003 added CIVIC-ARENA, renamed TRANSIT-WCEXPRESS to TRAIL.
