Road Atlas of BC

FDM Notes

GIS Innovations Ltd. Will deliver to our clients the Road Atlas of BC by a number of ways, one of which is the data in an FDM dispatch ready format.

Remark re Naming Conventions

FDM uses a 4 column naming schema: Prefix, Name, Type, Suffix, hereafter referred to as (PNTS).

For all of BC, the incoming name schema is commonly the Telus MSAG format: Name and Vector.  Also, and this is critical for FDM users to understand, the MSAG has a legacy issue of a relatively short character length limit.  This has lead Telus to use both standard abbreviations and conventions to generally shorten names, and if more length shortening is required, non-standard abbreviations.

Given these two very different designs, GIS Innovations uses several internal techniques to get these two ideas to work together within an FMD system.  The method used for each street name is recorded into an extra field NAME_SOURC.

over-ride

The PNTS rules are ignored an a specially entered PNTS is used.  Typically used where the name is too long resulting in the MSAG name as a custom string shortening.  Also used if the MGAS name varies with our name and neither are being changed (egA-B Road” versus “A B Road”, or other similar punctuations.

gisi_name

Informal names assigned by GIS Innovations, such as “unnamed FSR”, or “service road”.

numeric

The road is a numbered (St, Ave, etc).  These can be delivered either as with an standard suffix (ST, ND, RD, TH) attached (our default), or not.  We need client specific requests if a client does NOT want the numeric suffixes attached.

gisi_strct

The name is a GIS Innovations special name, typically a name with a “structure” added.  In these cases the entire PNTS is put into the Name field.  Eg. “Granville St Bridge”.

Standard name processing applies

Remark re Naming Conventions

The Telus MSAG has some naming conventions that are typically applied.  These typically apply to “key” words.  In order of precedence, we understand these rules to be:

NAME_SOURC

REMARK

autoOneWd

If the Name only has one word (whether the Type is present or not), do not abbreviate the Name.  Eg. North Rd, Lake Dr

autoPreFix

If the “first” word is a directional (C, N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, SW), OR the fully spelt out form (eg: NORTH)  and the PNTS does not already have a directional Prefix, then move the leading directional key word out of the Name and place it’s directional code into the Prefix field.  Note: this can be over-ruled by the GIS Innovations  setting up an over-ride.

auto1stWd

If the “first” word is one of the following key word abbreviations, then keep the abbreviated key word.  (MT, MTN, PR, PT, ST, HWY, FT), see full key table.

auto1stWd

If the “first” word is one of the following key words, then NO NOT abbreviate the key word.  (CREEK,  ISLAND, LAKE, VALLEY, PARK, RIVER) see full key table.

autoEdit

If the key word appears, abbreviate it.
